Monroe County, Miss.[WCBI]-The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries & Parks project to renovate Monroe Lake begins this month.

Since 1954 the beautiful lake north of Aberdeen has provided recreational opportunities for families near and far. But like anything used over time, a restoration becomes top priority.

“It has been here for a long time, its never been drained. So we look to rejuvenate the fish population. Redo the fishing peers and redo the boat ramps. They could use some work,” said Josh Howell, Lake Supervisor.

After the repairs are done at Lake Monroe, the plan is to restock the lake with crappie, catfish, bass, and brim.

While there is the slow drain of water from the lake, some of the usual restrictions are being lifted.

“They still need a fishing license and a lake permit, unless they are under 16 years old, 16 years of age. We encourage them to come and take these fish out before we start draining it, because once the fish are drained they’ll be going down the creek,” said Howell.

While lax restrictions are allowing for temporary options, some restrictions will remain in place.

“We still have gear restrictions. You can only use you know a rod and reel type or a pole. But you can’t use only jugs or trout lines which are the rules at all state lakes,” added Howell.

Draining and renovation of the lake is being considered a big job, the facility will be closed to the public during the time of repairs.

No “specific” time frame given for the renovation project that could take up to two years.
