LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Today marked the first day back for teachers and staff in the Lee County School District (LCSD).

A gathering this morning helped get them fired up for the new school year. Former Mississippi State quarterback Tyson Lee was the keynote speaker.

LCSD Superintendent Jimmy Weeks also updated teachers on construction and renovation projects across the district and previewed the next week’s common core training and curriculum development.

“With Common Core being in place, the rigor of our instructional program has increased greatly over the last couple of years,” Weeks said. “We’re just excited for students to come back so that we can get started on that and carry on doing what we do.”

“As our students come in, they have expectations of school and what their year is going to be like,” Plantersville Middle School Teacher Joan Stiles said. “And getting off on a good note — starting off fresh and new and in a positive light will set the tone for the school year.”

Teachers will be involved in professional development Monday through Wednesday. The first day of class for students is Thursday.
