LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Lee County officials celebrated the transition to a new radio system for first responders.

It has taken almost ten years, but Lee county is now on a new network system for better public safety.

EMT, police and firefighters will have new, upgraded radios that will allow for better communication between first responders.

The new system cost about $7 million, but the county was able to save some money by not having to add new towers.

Through the MIS-WIN system, communication can take place in more areas of the county.

“It gives us the best chance for recovery, it gives us the best public safety coverage, and it gives us that ability to inter operate with other state agencies,” Director of Lee County Communications Paul Harkins said.

The system also marks the upgrade from analog to digital. About 1,300 new radios are now in use.
