TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A longtime chaplain with the Lee County Sheriff’s Department gets a special honor. Dr. Buster Wilson has served as chaplain for the Lee County Sheriff’s Department for the past six years, but is retiring.

During a meeting of the Lee County Board of Supervisors this morning, Sheriff Jim Johnson presented Wilson with a plaque thanking him for his years of service. Dr. Wilson is a former law enforcement officer and says his background has helped him connect with the deputies.

“This is a tough occupation, has highest divorce rate, highest alcohol and drug abuse rate, highest suicide rate, second only to physicians, so these guys really need someone who can get in there among them and be somebody they can talk to, trust and pour their hearts out to and somebody who’s praying for them, and that’s super important.”

Wilson is full time pastor at New Prospect Baptist Church near Oxford.
