Video: Lee County Woman Faces Felony Child Neglect Charges

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -A four year old is found wandering a Lee county road and now his mother is behind bars.

Twenty two year old Alicia Rodgers is charged with one count of felony child neglect. Lee County Sheriff JIm Johnson says someone called 9 1 1 Tuesday, after finding a 4 year old boy walking alone County Road 47 in the Palmetto area.

Sheriff’s deputies say the child was not able to tell them where he lived or who was taking care of him.Deputies returned to the scene, where they were eventually contacted by Ms Rodgers, who said she was looking for her son.

Further investigation found that Rodgers had brought her son to a friend’s house, but had fallen asleep. When she woke up, 11 or 12 hours later, her son was missing. Sheriff Johnson says things could have had a much different outcome.

“Not only the elements of the weather, being dangerous as it is and getting worse as it goes, is who could have picked this child up. Or, if this child had gotten out, it was on a public street, luckily it was not a very travelled road, the child could have got out in a lane of traffic, you’re talking about a four year old child that’s unsupervised, doesn’t realize the risk they’re in, you think about and it absolutely makes you sick at your stomach.”

Rodgers is being held on a $75,000.00 bond. The child was turned over to his biological father.
