STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi lawmakers pass a bill that bans texting and social media use while driving.

Now, the bill goes to Governor Phil Bryant, who plans to sign House Bill 389.

The senate passed the legislation on Monday.

Under the bill, drivers can not write, send or read text messages, emails or social media messages.

Local law enforcement say the bill is long overdue.

“Believe it or not, most of the time it’s obvious when you see a person texting and driving. I’m behind people everyday who are texting or reading emails on their phone, so I think it will be obvious. I don’t think there will be a problem enforcing it at all,” said Starkville Police Chief, Frank Nichols.

After July 1st, the fine will increase from $25 to $100.

Mississippi is one of six states with no texting and driving ban.
