WEST POINT, MS (WCBI) – Mississippi celebrates Arbor Day by giving away seedlings, during this Tree Planting Week. The Clay County Soil and Water Conservation District has participated for more than 40 years. Forestry plays a vital role in the state’s economy and has a huge impact on the environment. Now, the conservation district provides at least two types of trees.

“Pine used to be the only thing we gave away. So, we have saturated the market with pine. Right now, the most popular is going to be the soft tooth oak because of the wildlife benefit. You can put it around the edges of your lawn and it brings in squirrels and deer.”

In Clay County, more than three hundred thousand trees have been given to property owners.
