COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Thousands of children across the nation are served by the foster care system each year.

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and on Saturday, the Lowndes County Department of Human Services hosted a fundraiser to help support those children.

The event was held at the GT Bowling Lanes in Columbus.

Children of all ages were able to put their bowling skills to the test.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act.

Organizers say awareness is key to stopping child abuse and nurturing children in foster care changes lives for the better.

“It’s also for children to be able to come out and have fun. We’re also raising money towards putting back into the children that we have in custody. So they can have a productive life while they’re in custody and after custody,” says Latoya Taylor, a Supervisor with the Lowndes County DHS.

This is the first year for the Lowndes County DHS fundraiser.
