LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-There was a warning issued but Lowndes County’s tornado sirens remained silent as the storm passed.

Now, some residents are concerned about their safety.

A tornado warning was issued for Lowndes County at 8:52pm Thursday night.

Friday, technicians were sent to every siren in the county.

No damage was found.

However, Lowndes County EMA director, Cindy Lawrence says the issue could stem from a computer connection to the warning system or a lack of electricity. Because the siren needs electrical power to operate.

Now, the county is upgrading the system.

“We’ve just received a grant from FEMA we just installing 10 new sirens will be ready to be activated in an event there is severe weather coming in even this weekend next week we are ready with those sirens,” says Cindy Lawrence.

Meteorologists say not to rely solely on tornado sirens. You can purchase a weather radio or download WCBI’s Weather App to stay alert.
