LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Lowndes County schools will try again to convince voters to invest in the district’s future.

In a preemptive move, the school board tonight in a 3-2 vote approved a resolution to hold a Feb. 3 referendum on a multi-million dollar bond issue for upgrades, renovations and new facilities.

However, complete project logistics and the dollar amount of the bond issue remain open ended pending further discussions for now, as the board has yet to hash out specifics.

Board members Brian Clark and Jaqueline Gray account for the two nays. Clark said the board was “putting the cart before the horse” by setting a referendum date without knowing what exactly citizens would be voting for. Gray said the community already voiced their opinion on a similar referendum in August, and added the board was not listening to the community by attempting another referendum.

Board Attorney Jeff Smith said in order to guarantee a February election, the board would have to move on the referendum date as soon as possible.
