WEST POINT, Miss.(WCBI) — Team USA is still savoring their Handa Cup Tournament victory over Team World at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point over the weekend.

When the final putt sealed a victory by the U.S. Legends pro golfers over their world counterparts Sunday afternoon, organizers of the four-day event breathed a big sigh of relieve. The event LPGA Legends Handa Cup had gone off as planned.

“Knock on wood there were no glitches. And the women that were here from all over the world had a great time,” said LPGA Tournament Director Rick Milburn.

“Well when you have an event such as the Handa Cup that brings multiple people into your town you are anxious to see where they are traveling from and if they are spending money in your town, which contributes to the local economy,” said West Point-Clay County Growth Alliance Director Lisa Klutts.

That’s why a special zip code survey taken by The West Point-Clay County Growth Alliance was able to pinpoint visitors from far away as Chicago, Memphis, Texas and even Italy.

Old Waverly has had its eye on possibly more pro golf tournaments in the future. In fact, a second Links style course is under construction. The Handa Cup was a good test run.

“You know Old Waverly has had some major tournaments here in the past and this probably won’t be the last. And it was a good building stone for another event sometime down the road,” said Milburn.

Those athletes that have made women’s golf popular, did not disappoint those in attendance.

“And they are still awesome players. I mean I was amazed at the shots that I saw out there this weekend,” said Milburn.

Old Waverly drew more than 100,000 fans to the LPGA’s Women’s U.S. Open in 1999. Since then it’s hosted several other smaller professional and major amateur tournaments. The Handa Cup puts it back on the spotlight for the major pro golf tours.

The final economic impact of this weekend’s Handa Cup Tournament is expected to be released in November.
