NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — One of the coldest Februarys on record turned out to be shot in the arm for overall retail sales in Northeast Mississippi.

New state numbers show taxes collected on retail sales were up in 54 of 90 towns across the region. That was a 15 percent improvement from last year.

Overall, sales tax collections were up almost 2 percent in the region.

Columbus, Starkville and Pontotoc were the only large retail centers to see declines, while Tupelo, Louisville, New Albany and Oxford were among the gainers.

Sales tax collections are a major source of revenue for most cities in the area.
