NORTH CAROLINA (WCBI) — The United States marine killed yesterday at Camp Lejune has ties to the Tupelo area.

Mark Boterf, the 21-year-old shooting victim, attended Tupelo High School before moving to Texas in 2010.

His twin brother, Mike Boterf, identified his brother as the shooting victim in published reports, but the US Department of Defense has yet to officially release any names.

While the incident remains under investigation, initial reports indicate Boterf’s death was likely caused by the accidental discharge of an M4 service rifle in the guard shack.

Boterf was a member of the second radio battalion at Camp Lejune located in North Carolina.

The incident remains under investigation.
