MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — Text messages about government businesses are public record. That’s the ruling from the Mississippi Ethics Commission.

The opinion was given today.

This came about after the Daily Journal requested Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton’s text messages last October, relating to the resignation of former Development Services Director BJ Teal.

The commission says the city violated the state’s open records law.

This is the first time texting has been addressed with a public records request and does set a precedent for the future.
