TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Students throughout the area had a special guest read to them today.

Mississippi First Lady Deborah Bryant read to second graders at Tupelo’s Lawhon Elementary School.

She read a book titled “The Fib, A Wordy Tale” by Mississippi author Bill Wilson.

It’s part of an 82-county tour across the state where she reads to students to promote literacy and reading.

“We like to get the children to get up at the end and read some of those words with the definitions,” Bryant said. “I think it encourages them to try, and that’s the main thing I want to bring home to them, to at least try. If you don’t try how do you know what you can do.”

Lawhon marked the 73rd school on the reading tour. Bryant was in Pontotoc earlier in the day.
