STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Two Mississippi beauty queens are joining forces to help mentor local girls.

Miss Riverland’s Jasmine Murray hosted the “13 Going on 30” girls camp at the Starkville Boys and Girls Club.

“Basically what we’re here to do today is to teach young girls about not growing up too fast and embracing their age and not making adult decisions before they have to,” says Murray.

The event included a motivational speaker, one-on-one peer mentoring and a dance workshop lead by Miss Tupelo, Kristen Furr.

“Dancing helps to instill confidence in young girls which I think is super important growing up. It ties into Jasmine’s platform of being who you are, at the age that you are, and being the most confident that you can be,” says Furr.

The girls also participated in skits, received a t-shirt and goody bags. Both Murray and Furr will compete against one another in this year’s Miss Mississippi competition.

The camp was sponsored by the McMillan Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
