STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Over the past two weeks, winter weather has pushed its way through Northeast Mississippi and Alabama, forcing many businesses and schools to shut down.
Only a day of class separates many students from spring break, causing campuses to be a little more quiet this Friday.
Over the last two weeks, Mississippi State students have been out of class for three days due to winter weather.

The campus was closed two days last week and on Thursday this week, opening back up on the last day before Spring Break.

“I do believe a lot of people have taken their time to go to Spring Break a little bit early,” said MSU student, Derrick Lewis.

With just one day separating students from their much-anticipated week off, students said the campus was less crowded as many chose to begin their vacation early.

For Lewis, earning an education trumps a week of fun.

“We all come to college to better ourselves for the future and that week of having the time of your life doesn’t outweigh the potential benefits of college,” added Lewis.

For some students, mid-term exams continued through Friday.

Kathryn Rooker says she pulled her first college all-niter studying to ace her test.

“Really no time to skip class when you’ve had like three snow days, so it’s definitely a cram time right before spring break,” said Rooker.

For others, no matter if a break is in sight, attendance affects their class grade and it’s all about investing their time wisely.

“I pay to go here, so I’m going to get my money’s worth. Teachers take the time out of their day to show up, so I’m going to give them the respect due. If I don’t show up, I don’t get attendance , which can affect my grade and I don’t want to do that, it’s a waste of money,” said MSU student, Ian Blakemoore.
