Tupelo, MS (WCBI)-Mississippi’s new superintendent of education made a stop in our area as part of a effort to exchange ideas with public school administrators and hear about challenges facing school districts. Dr. Carey Wright has been the state’s superintendent of education since November 1st. She was among five finalists chosen for the position and is making a tour of the state, visiting with education officials. Dr. Wright says there are many concerns voiced by public school administrators throughout the state, among them, adequate funding for education.
She says although Governor Phil Bryant will provide level funding, the state board will request more funds for several areas, specifically the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, or MAEP.

“The state board will definitely be pushing for full funding of MAEP, no doubt about that and I think we are also requesting additional funding for the literacy part of it , I think the governor’s budget is 9 point 95 million and we are looking to ask for 15 ”

Dr. Wright says she believes there is a place for charter schools, but also believes there needs to be a formula to hold charter schools accountable and measure their success.
