MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-Retired university professor David Parvin was convicted of killing his wife but he appealed. And the Mississippi Supreme Court overturned the judgement. The justices ordered a new trial for Parvin. Today[Friday], Monroe Circuit Judge Paul Funderburk heard Parvin’s request for bond. Today’s hearing before Judge Funderburk had nothing to do with deciding guilt or innocence. Parvin was convicted in his wife’s death in 2011 but earlier this year that conviction was thrown out and a new trial ordered . The hearing had to do with his action on June 25th while in custody at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Parvin who could be seen coming out of court Friday had been granted bail after his case was overturned, but apparently he became irate and there was pushing and scuffling with a deputy. Prosecutors oppose bail for the former economics professor saying he is “unfit” for bond. Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell as well as his Chief Deputy Curtis Knight took the stand during the hearing. Words used to describe Parvin’s actions were belligerent, upset, aggressive, and even dangerous. Defense attorney Jim Waide mentioned more than once that Parvin, who thought he would immediately be released was concerned about taking his medication. Waide also stressed the point that Parvin has caused no problems since the incident. After closing statements from the defense and prosecution, Judge Funderburk said he would keep everything under advisement and make his ruling Monday afternoon.
