ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Monroe County youth are getting a first hand look at what it’s like to be in law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Department is hosting a Summer Youth Mentor program to help keep kids on the right path. Making good decisions was the overall theme of the mentoring program. The free workshop is for Monroe County youth ages 12-18.

Aberdeen Police Chief, Henry Randle, is passing along life lessons to the group.

“Life is all about choices. We want to bring out the importance of drugs and alcohol, stay away from it. We want to bring in positive people to teach them that the things they do now can affect them later in life,” says Randle.

The program includes physical training with the Deputies, a K-9 demonstration and a tour of the Detention Center. The goal is to teach kids the consequences of making poor choices.

“Cyberbullying, you can go to jail for it. It’s a federal offense,” says Taylor .

“If you drink under the drinking age, you’ll get in a lot of trouble,” says Timarco.

“Go to school, go to college, get a good life. Don’t go to jail and don’t do the wrong things,” says Jalana.

Randle hopes to build a bridge of communication with the next generation.

“My main goal is, let’s turn this word snitch into something positive. Snitching means, in my book, to tell us exactly what’s going on because when you help confirm what we already know, that helps you and your community,” says Randle.

The FBI and Monroe County Narcotics and Investigative divisions will also mentor the group and hopefully make a lasting impression with the students this week. In Aberdeen, LaMonica Peters, WCBI News.>

Deputies want the program to expand. This is the 2nd year for the Monroe County Summer Youth program.
