COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -Could the next Hilary Clinton be sitting in a classroom at MUW? Young college women were educated on the importance of getting involved in the political process.

“I’ve become inspired to seek office in public service later on in my life,” said MSU student Bianca Tatum.

“Politics, I thought they were all just crazy people out to just make a dollar but no, they’re real people with real problems,” added  MSU student Jamie Aron.

“The main reason for women not being in public service is because they don’t think they can handle the work load,” said student Asia Madison.

These are just a few opinions these women had about politics, until this week.

This workshop at MUW is aimed at promoting women being more involved in the government. It’s a partnership between the Stennis Center for Public Service, MUW and the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University.

“Women offer a unique prospective, we’re involved with children, certainly our spouses, the community not to say men aren’t in touch but I think women bring a different perspective,” said State Senator Angela Turner James.

“Women have come a long ways but you know we are still dominated by males, motherhood and a lot of other possibilities that we’re bringing from the past into the future,” said State Representative Reecy Dickson.

The five day program is open to any undergraduate college woman from all across the state. They’ll learn about politics, leadership and how they can be involved to make our state and community better.

“Mississippi is a state that has never elected a female to congress and women are under represented in the state of Mississippi. We think we need more women leaders because women bring so much intelligence and creativity and ability that it wouldn’t makes sense to deny ourselves that talent and resource,” added Associate Director for the Stennis Center for Public Service, Brother Rogers.

Organizers hope the program will help students network and encourage them to pursue active careers in the future. The program is free and will conclude this Friday.
