Video: MSMS Kicks off School Year with Opening Convocation

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science celebrates the official beginning of the school year with an opening convocation.

In attendance were city officials, the 256 members of the student body, as well as faculty and staff. This year’s guest speaker is Elizabeth Wayne, a medical research and MSMS graduate. Wayne spoke about hard work, perseverance and taking pride in being a Mississippian. She credits MSMS for molding her into the achiever she is today.

“It’s always sentimental for me to talk about MSMS,” Wayne said. “When I talk to people whom I’ve graduated with, they always also say the same, that they wouldn’t be the neurosurgeons they are now, they wouldn’t be engineers, and they wouldn’t be able to give back to Mississippi that way they can if it hand’t been for MSMS.”

MSMS is regularly noted as one of the top high schools in the US. The recently graduated class of 2014 alone was offered more than $20 million in scholarships.
