NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI) – The city of Nettleton was founded in 1888, and on Saturday night the town is celebrating its 125th birthday with food and entertainment downtown.

Mayor Jimmy Taylor helped cut the ceremonial birthday cake, and gave the first piece to longtime Monroe County resident 91-year old Lawrence “Rabbit” Kennedy, who served in the Army during World War Two, Korea and Vietnam.

When he retired in 1975, he left as the most decorated soldier in the history of the Army.

Taylor says one purpose of tonight’s celebration was to raise money for a Veterans Memorial Park in Nettleton.

“We have a veterans park with a memorial for the veterans who have paid the ultimate price and just trying to enlighten people more about Nettleton and its history and trying to raise some money for our park and recreation areas,” Taylor said.

Taylor says they need to raise $40,000 for the monument that will be erected in the park, which is located not too far from downtown.

Eventually the park will also include a walking track.
