TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The new Highway 6, which will link US 45 in Tupelo to Pontotoc County could be opened by mid-June.

Crews are working on the final 10 mile section of what is referred to as the new Highway 6.

The road will make for an uninterrupted 4-lane link from US 45 in south Tupelo to Interstate 55 in Batesville, through Pontotoc and Oxford.

Engineers say part of the segment still needs a final layer of asphalt, signage, striping, shoulder work and other work.

If weather cooperates, the work could be finished by mid-June. The official name for the new road is US 278 SR 6.

Cost for the entire 10-mile stretch is $68 million.
