BROOKSVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A Noxubee County school has a new name in honor of a long time educator and community advocate.

Wilson Elementary School is now named the Virgil Jones Jr Elementary school. The name change comes after many months of hard work and a dream that has come true for Virgil Jones Jr. Jones was the principal of the school for more than 20 years, a hard working community activist and also the school board president. The school was officially renamed in a ceremony that also paid tribute to Jones’ years of dedication.

“It means a great deal because he’s my father and I’ve walked these halls and I’ve seen him in action for many, many years and today he is being honored and I’m truly grateful that he’s being honored,” said Dr. Kevin Jones, the son of Virgil Jones Jr.

Several guest speakers were featured at the ceremony, following a dinner for those in attendance.
