NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Noxubee County residents could soon have local emergency alert messages in the palm of their hand.

Noxubee County supervisors are moving forward with a plan to allow the county’s Emergency Management Agency to send out text message and telephone alerts regarding emergency announcements.

County EMA Director Brad Moore said it’s part of a statewide program through the Golden Triangle Planning and Development District, which says about 80 percent of Noxubee County residents’ cellphones and landlines are already in its database.

The plan will cost about $2,400 per year, half of which will be reimbursed through state emergency management grants.

Officials say a three-year contract is required to participate, and that it could be fully operational in about 60 days.
