BELDEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Keeping roads railways and other forms of transportation in the best condition impacts all consumers.

That’s what brought together economic development officials, business officials and government leaders for a meeting on intermodal transportation.

The meeting was hosted by Itawamba Community College at the Belden campus, and featured speakers who talked of ways to better connect air, rail, water and roadway transport.

Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert said a statewide survey will help private sector and government leaders plan and prioritize future projects.

“Our goal is to make certain that we have a series of public meetings to make sure we understand all the transportation needs, not only from a bridge and road standpoint but also intermodal, and to make sure we take full advantage of all our resources in our state,” Tagert said.

“As we’re trying to build a workforce system, which is one of the most important components of economic development, the transportation system is a very important thing,” Three Rivers Workforce Director Bill Renick said.

That transportation study will lead to a statewide freight plan. The study will continue through 2015.
