LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The scope of damage and loss from the April 28 tornadoes has prompted emergency agencies across the area to push for state and federal funding for storm shelters.

Lowndes County has been told it may get funding for one 12-15 person shelter. The county was originally told it might be able to get 5-8, but the numbers have been scaled back.

If funding is available, the shelter will be built at the county road department’s central offices on Hwy 45 N.

After tornadoes hammered the state three years ago, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) made thousands of dollars in grants available to help local governments and individuals build storm shelters.
