Oxford,MS (WCBI) — Oxford’s crackdown on overtime parking in its popular downtown is working. Now the city likely will take the next step.

The city’s downtown parking advisory committee has recommended aldermen install parking meters in the 300 or so premium spots in the Square area. The meters could be expanded later to free parking lots on downtown side streets. Last year, the city hired a company to manage parking and stiffer fines and improved enforcement have increased parking turnover. But the fines aren’t covering the costs or generating enough revenue to pay for a planned downtown parking garage. The meters could be in place by August 1st at the latest.
