OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) -Beginning today, Oxford Police will begin arresting any unlicensed taxi in the city.

The new rule comes after after an incident earlier this month where Uber drivers -an online service that connects passengers to area drivers-failed to convince police it is a licensed vehicle-for-hire service.

Police say the company has not complied with local and state ordinances, raising safety concerns.

” If you’re taking a ride with someone that is not permitted through the city of Oxford, we have no way of regulating who they are or what’s going on. Our vehicles have to have cameras in them, they have to have a certain amount of insurance.”

The new policy covers unlicensed taxi drivers.
