JACKSON and COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The pressure to fund a new academy for state troopers in Mississippi is mounting.A political flap between Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves and the Department of Public Safety over the department’s spending and accountability has held up the measure in the Legislature. Safety experts say the highway patrol is as many as 150 troopers short of what is needed. The last class of new troopers graduated more than two years ago. The measure is ready to go in the House and area state representatives say the public is suffering.

“I don’t think our citizens should stand, should be held hostage because of some misunderstanding or miscommunication or lack of communication,” said Representative, Tyrone Ellis (D-Starkville).

Wednesday, Governor Phil Bryant and some other state leaders will hold a press conference to call for an end to the impasse.
