PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) — Pontotoc area churches want to make a strong statement about the proposed ordinances allowing the sale of alcoholic beverages in the city.

And Sunday night they plan to gather at the Courthouse Square to voice their opposition to the idea.

Voters will actually decide on two separate proposals, one would allow the sale of beer and light wine while the other would allow the sale of liquor.

Proponents argue that it would bring more sales tax revenue into the community.

But opponents say statistics have shown that for every $1 generated, it costs $4  because of an increase in crime and health issues.

Greg Herndon of Troy First Baptist Church is one of the organizers. He says there is a spiritual element argument as well.

“We believe the scripture teaches very strongly in the book of Proverbs that wine is a mocker,” he says. “And wine makes people foolish. And it is something we believe the Bible teaches against.”

Herndon says they hope to have a large crowd for the event that kicks off at 6 p.m. The election was called because both petitions received the required 715 signatures needed to be considered.

An election for both referendums is slated for September 16.
