Video: Quick Response Time Credited with Arrest

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Columbus Police arrest a mother and son, following the robbery of the Rite Aid on Highway 45. The crime happened around 11:00 Wednesday morning. The mother, Sherry Jeffcoat of West Point, has since been released. Investigators believe, she didn’t know what was going on. They think her son, 29 Joshua Jeffcoat, walked into the pharmacy, claimed he had a gun, and demanded a laundry list of controlled substances. Our cameras rolled as police made their move.

“Mom, I love you.”

This is why traffic was stopped at 11:00 this morning on Highway 45 North.

“Two seconds of receiving the phone call, the patrol division was on the scene,” says Chief Selvain McQueen.

The Rite-Aid on 45 North in Columbus. The phone call to 9-11 came from the pharmacy here. A man entered the store, approached the pharmacist and made specific demands, before fleeing.

Investigators got the details about the suspect and the getaway car from witnesses.

“We went in, cordoned off the area, blocked the intersections, to restrict movement,” says Chief McQueen.

The parking lot adjacent to K-Mart. This is where officers stopped the fleeing minivan. The suspected getaway driver – a mother. The suspect robber – her son.

Chief McQueen credits three key factors with a quick resolution.

“High visibility. Cutting edge technology and training led us to…and then good old fashioned police work led us to the apprehension of these two suspects,” says Chief McQueen.

Joshua Jeffcoat came back to our area from Huntsville, Alabama. Investigators believe he has history of drug problems.
