TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Downtown Tupelo was awash in pink Saturday morning.

The gun sounded and 3,600 runners and walkers took off on the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Their goal was to raise money for the treatment of breast cancer, and for research in finding a cure for that ailment.

Race for the Cure chairperson Melonie Kight says breast cancer affects almost every American in some way.

“There are so many people who are affected by breast cancer,” Kight said. “You know you know someone you go to church with, to school with, your own family members and friends. So they know how it affects a family, and the individual so trying to find a cure is really important to many people and that’s why they participate.”

Race officials say they raised about $44,000 at Saturday’s event.

75 percent of the funds will be used for mammograms for women in North Mississippi. The remaining 25 percent will be used for research.
