TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Young girls are getting the chance of a life time this week as they have been taking dance lessons from a professional. The participants have been busy working with a New York City Rockette. WCBI’s Alyssa Martin visited one of the classes and has the story.

The curtain recently closed on Alissa Lavergne’s fourth season as a famous “Radio City” Rockette.

During her break, she is sharing a few dance steps with girls at the North Mississippi Dance Centre.

“I’ve been working with some fabulous kids doing some precision dancing, some musical theater dancing and just having a really good time with them,” LaVergne said.

This isn’t LaVergne’s only stop. The seasoned dancer says when she is not in New York dancing, she travels around teaching dance classes.

“This is probably something they haven’t had the opportunity to have here at the studio, so to have them experience something different besides maybe just ballet or the hip hop they’ve been doing, it gives them something else to strive for and to try to do well in and they’re nailing it, they’re doing really well,” she said.

“I try to stress to them that even if this isn’t something you like to do or its not your forte, or whatever, its just fun its not serious. If you don’t get it, I don’t care, just dance and have fun and have a mile on your face. That’s all I can ask for with kids,” LaVergne added.

For these young dancers, learning from a Rockette is a dream come true.

“She’s been making sure that we are learning stuff that Rockette’s would do,” Arianna Georgenti said.

“I’ve always wanted to like, dance like from a Rockette,” exclaimed Ella Grace Ramels.

“Well, it means to me a life experience and a exciting experience because shes a Rockette,” said Isabella Posey.

“Its been really fun because we’ve never experienced something like this and we’ve learned a lot of new stuff,” said Madisyn Graves.

When she is not on the road teaching dance classes, Alissa works in Houston, Texas as a professional dancer also. Alissa plans to return to Tupelo to teach another class next summer.
