FULTON, Miss. (WCBI) — It was bitter cold Saturday morning in Fulton.

But it didn’t dissuade participants in the fifth annual Monster Mash 5K fun run for juvenile diabetes.

The proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Shelby Prestage organized the first event while she was still a student at Itawamba AHS, and now she is Itawamba County’s unofficial spokesperson in the fight against that disease.

“We’ve been able to raise about $15,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation that’s really awesome,” she said. “But we also have made a really big impact into the schools on diabetes and how the students can help peers out if they have diabetes and how to care for them in case of an emergency or something like that happens.”

Prestage, who contracted juvenile diabetes herself, hopes that Saturday’s event will raise money to help 10-year-old Dylan Quinn, who has had Type 1 diabetes since he was six years old. She hopes that he’ll see a cure in his lifetime.
