Video: School Districts May Get To Set Their Own Calendars

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — School districts will likely beĀ  able to once again set their own calendars after the Mississippi house reversed a law preventing schools from starting before the third Monday in August. The date debate has been controversial since the beginning because it impacted school pay schedules, graduation dates, and chances to start early college enrollments.

For example, some high school seniors would not have enough classroom hours to graduate high school in December and start college the following January. Coast lawmakers had pushed for the later start saying it would give them a longer summer tourist season.

The House could call the bill up for more debate but that’s not expected.
