LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -For some, it’s fate may all change when Republicans take over Congress next year. For now though, sign ups for the second year of the Affordable Care Act are approaching. WCBI’s Alyssa Martin attended a free information seminar today and tells us what kinds of questions consumers are asking even with uncertainty looming.
A month-long sign up period for what commonly is known as Obamacare begins Saturday. For those with little or no insurance, it means lots of questions.

“And if you do not have any type of health insurance, make sure you go ahead and enroll by December and pay your premium by December 15th so that you can have coverage by January 1st,” said the Program Manager for Health Help Mississippi, Lateshia Butler.

The non-profit Health Help Mississippi helps consumers understand what insurance options may be best — and affordable — for them.

“Last year we only had Humana and Magnolia in the health insurance marketplace. Now we have United Health Care in the marketplace, so now consumers all over the state of Mississippi have 2 options in the health insurance marketplace,” said Butler.

After a rocky start with computer glitches during last year’s start-up, advocates spent months making improvements.

“Just looking online now, the step by step process seems a lot easier. Consumers, I’ve noticed, are on the ball. They’re already getting started and not waiting until the very last-minute to come in. So a lot of consumers are taking the issue head on,” said Butler.

While Republicans have vowed to dismantle the comprehensive system a piece at a time, Butler says consumers she’s dealt with aren’t deterred. Having insurance is too important to them.

“They were welcoming to the health insurance marketplace, people were signing up, people were satisfied with their plans and I’ve seen a lot of my consumers from last year return back,” said Butler.

The Winston County Library will host another question and answer session on December 10th. Other sessions also are planned across the region before December 15th.
