TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi’s Public Service Commissioner is asking utility companies to grant a year long extension to a program that helps small businesses reduce energy start up costs. Commissioner Brandon Presley , along with officials from Atmos Energy, held a meeting this morning at the CDF offices in Tupelo to talk about the small business rate incentive program.

That program was implemented in September 2011 and it does things such as waive deposits for natural gas service, gives a one year, 25 percent discount on the gas bill for the company and other cost saving measures.  Presley says the program has helped many small business owners save a lot of money .

“So far this program which gives rate increases through Atmos Energy Corporation and other large utilities in Mississippi has helped 1032 small business owners save over $700,000 and we know this is important, small business owners are who create jobs in this economy and we want to be able to help them stay in business, open their business, expand their business,” Presley said.

Presley is holding a series of meetings across the state for small business owners. For more information on the program you can go to http://www.psc.state.ms.us
