SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Life has many obstacles. Often, the key to clearing them is in the approach. And with technology nowadays, cyber bullying gives kids easier access to hurtful statements on websites and through text messages.

Bullying can cause an extreme amount of stress to the person experiencing it and they may often think of hurting themselves or others.

One Smithville High School junior found the courage to stand up to her bullies, then help others.

“I was cheering one night at a football game and there was some girls that were being bullied and having thoughts of suicide and other things and it just really touched home with me because I was bullied,” said founder and student Darby Dabbs.

Bullying can happen anyone, even a cheerleader like Darby.

“I was bullied by a lot of girls in 9th and 10th grade, phone calls, messages, emails, I didn’t even want to leave my house. I ended up getting on depression medicine,” said Dabbs.

More than 3.2 million young people are bullied each year. Darby is doing what she can to fix that problem through the group Students Against Bullying.

“Darby came to me because of a situation that she was dealing with personality..and because of that she developed a burden to help other students who are dealing with bullying and negative peer pressure,” said sponsor Dana Coopeland.

The group is just getting started, and kids of all ages are welcome.

“People don’t know what goes on at home and usually it’s them getting bullied because of there home life, there outside life of school. It just wasn’t bullying, it’s about problems and talking about the problem and basically getting comfortable with people,” said member Jacob Allred.

Darby wants her peers to know, that they are not alone. Somebody cares, and somebody will listen.

“You can’t fight them back , sometimes the best thing to do is to walk away…” added Dabbs.
Students Against Bullying meets Wednesday evenings from 5 to 6 at Crossbound Church in Smithville.
