Video: Some Republicans Cross the Aisle to Boost Funding for Schools

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Nine Senate Republicans buck the GOP leadership. And, that means some hope for increased funding for the state’s K through 12 schools. The nine joined Democrats in the Senate to add 60 million dollars to the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.

The Republican leadership had recommended level funding for schools in the new budget that starts July 1st. Monroe County Democrat Hob Bryan offered the motion as a way to urge a conference committee to increase funding based on higher state revenue estimates.

The additional money could make a big difference for local schools. For instance, it would mean an extra $928,000 for Lee County schools, almost $300,000 for New Albany and more than $220,000 for Amory.
