Millport, Al. (WCBI) — The South Lamar Rescue Squad has been around for 40 years. And now they are throwing a big celebration for the people of Millport and Lamar County, a way of saying thank you for letting us serve you.

Since 1974 people in Millport and Lamar County Alabama have been benefiting from the services of brave and caring people of the rescue team. Two years after it was established, rescue squad captain Lucy Bowles came on board. Bowles and others are busy preparing fresh giant chocolate chip cookies for a weekend shindig.

“The early years was a lot of learning that we had to do. Lot of training. And I was one of the first EMT’s in our squad,” said Lucy Bowles, South Lamar Rescue Squad.

When the volunteer responders get on the scene they are the first medical personnel to perform their necessary duties with compassion, not asking for any pay in return.

“When we go to a real bad situation and we have to be able to calm the family and do the best we can for them. And they always appreciate you know what we do,” said Bowles.

“Ninety percent of the people you are coming across you either are kin to, you know went to school with or have seen in the grocery store. So its not like you are picking up complete strangers. You are actually have a bond with these people out of the kindness of your heart with no reimbursement,” said Clayton Aldridge/South Lamar Rescue Squad.

The birthday celebration is from 2-5 PM Saturday at the Rescue Squad building on Highway 96.
