TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Students at a Tupelo school returned to classes for the first time since last Monday’s tornado, and were greeted by some special guests. Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick, Mayor Jason Shelton and State Senator Nancy Collins were on hand to welcome students back to Joyner Elementary. Portions of the school were damaged when the tornado swept through the neighborhood and crews worked throughout the last week to get most of the campus ready for classes. Rick says it was an honor to welcome the students and encourage them as they finish out the year.

“Well, that’s because they’re little and shiny objects attract little kids so,” said Miss Mississippi, Chelsea Rick. “They were all really sweet and I was excited to see them too because they are wonderful little kids and they’ve been through so much but they all had smiling faces and they did tell me they were ready to learn so I hope they were.”

Joyner Kindergarten students will have to attend Church Street School because their wing received more damage. Miss Mississippi and the mayor also visited with the students at what will be their new school for the rest of the semester
