STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Starkville school and city leaders are at odds over a $474,000 tax windfall.

The city realized it had money left over from school construction bonds issued more than 20 years ago. Mayor Parker Wiseman originally planned to turn the money over to the city school district but backed off when Alderman Roy Perkins raised questions about aldermen not authorizing the transfer, and whether the city should keep the money and cut taxes.

After a debate this week, the issue is at an impasse. The city school district already is seeking a 2.5 mill tax increase.

Perkins and others say the left over bond money could help reduce the burden on taxpayers.
