STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Starkville aldermen narrowly reject an effort to reverse course on an $8 million partnership that could lead to a new police department and city hall.

By a 4 to 3 vote, aldermen rejected Ward 6’s Roy Perkins’ motion to rescind the package the city approved last June to partner with West Brothers Construction on a new city hall on the site of the former electric department.

West Brothers would build the facility using city-backed bonds and the city lease it back.

The move allowed the city to avert a public referendum on a an issue that twice has been rejected by voters in recent years.

A citizen took the city to court, claiming aldermen violated open meetings laws in reaching the deal. A decision in that court case still is pending.

Perkins’ motion would have ended the deal and put the measure to a vote in next June’s city elections.
