STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Dads at Sudduth Elementary are stepping up to the plate.

The school held a meeting in Starkville Monday night about a new program called WATCH D.O.G.S. It’s a national volunteer effort to get dads more involved in their child’s school.

Around 60 to 70 dads showed up. Watch D.O.G.S. stands for Dads of Great Students. It’s an opportunity for fathers to serve as positive role models for their kids.

Terry Long and his 7 year old daughter Serenity plan on spending more time together in the classroom. He’s excited about becoming a volunteer watchdog.

“I think it’s great! As much crazy stuff going on in the world today, it’s still nice to know they’re calling for parents and dads to come in and be a good influence. Alot of times, dads, we work so much it’s nice to spend time with our kids at their place.

Watch D.O.G.S. gives fathers some great ways to pitch in. They can escort their children to class, monitor the lunch room or help out in a variety of other ways.

“They’ll learn about the program and select days they’ll like to come and we’ll tailor schedules to make it work out. A lot of times the school moms help out with classrooms and this is a venue where the dads have a script and the dads can help out the teachers,” said Assistant Principal Jim Gassaway.

Active dads are welcome at Sudduth.

“Not only does it let the child know that you want to get involved in their lives, not just as home, but also their school. And it brings a positive vibe to the school and a positive vibe to the community,” says Jason Clark.

“It’s always good for fathers to be involved in spending time with their kids but also in their education,” says Daniel Peterson.

“Spend time with your kids, come out and spend time with your kids. Be a father to them,” says Bruce Spencer.

As for the kids, they’re more than thrilled to spend school days with their fathers.

“I’m really happy!! Cause I love my daddy,” says Serenity Long.
