STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Polio is considered a disease of the past, except in developing countries around the world where it remains a threat. UNICEF and the World Health Organization have made today, World Polio Day.

The Starkville Sportsplex hosted a Family Information Event about the debilitating disease. Polio can spread through contaminated food and water. If left untreated it can cause paralysis and even death.

“We’re looking at diseases that potentially, without a vaccine, we could have thousands – tens of thousands – of cases, so we all need to make sure we are aware of all of the things we need to do to prevent them because they could come to be something that would be a global threat.”
Contamination prevention includes using good sanitation practices.
