Starkville, MS(WCBI)-Students at Armstrong Middle School in Starkville are making special historic quilts.

Using construction paper they are making squares with certain coded information and symbols used by slaves in pre-Civil War days. Each student will have their quilt hanging in the hallway at the school in February.

“I learned that it was very tough surviving as a slave. Some people didn’t get a lot of food and shoes and stuff that we have now. And that we are very fortunate now. So we need to be thankful.,” said Blake Rogers, Student.

One of the students has a quilt used by her ancestors traveling the underground railroad.
