SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-The Town of Smithville held their State of the Town address Tuesday night.

Mayor Gregg Kennedy, school officials and other town leaders gave speeches about the progress the town has made over the past two years.

Mayor Kennedy says they plan on re-opening several structures this summer and fall.

“The kids are gonna be in school this fall, if you go up to the campus right now the gym has been started, which will serve as a storm shelter. We’re looking to break ground some time in May on my new City Hall. The Medical Clinic is in 2 weeks of breaking ground so there’s a lot of things going on,” says Mayor Kennedy.

In April 2011, Smithville was hit with an E-F5 tornado, the deadliest tornado to hit Mississippi in over 50 years.

16 people died and more than 120 homes were destroyed.
