NEW HOPE, MISS. (WCBI) – New Hope Middle School students are learning hard work pays off…and can mean fun, too. As part of a revamped behavior reward system that already is showing results in the classroom, the school is doing some things a little differently this year. That included a talent show today.

It’s a reward system that teaches students the importance of good behavior.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, or PBIS, reinforces the positive behavior teachers want to see in their students. The school has used a version of the system for several years, but began taking another look this year for ways to make it even more effective.

“We want to reward them and reinforce those, them being respectful, them turning in their work, them following directions, all those things you want to see in a school-wide reinforcement system,” said RTI Coordinator, Hope Elliott.

Once a month, the students look forward to ” Freestyle Friday” when they get a break from the classroom
This month, it’s a fall festival and talent show for those with the best behavior.

“The kids are excited. They look forward to things outside of the normal day and so anytime we can put something out there for them to earn or something for them to enjoy, they look forward to it,” said Principal of New Hope Middle School, Sam Allison.

The theme for the talent show is “I Can Only Imagine” which is designed to motivate students to reach for the stars in their life.

Former New Hope students returned to serve as judges and entertainment.

Chandler Blakely is the former Mr. New Hope Middle School and Winter Ball King, he brings his talents back to the stage for a special performance.
“Are you excited?”
“Yes ma’am,” said Blakely.
“Are you nervous?”
“Yes ma’am,” said Blakely.

Teachers say the results for rewarding students for good behavior is evident.

“And so many times we focus on negative behavior…We call a parent because of negative behavior, or correct a student because of negative behavior but if you can recognize a student for good behavior, it’s amazing the results you see,” said New Hope teacher, Liza Miley.

Educators plan to continue with monthly free style Friday’s throughout this year.

There were 12 performers in the talent show. The winner took away a $50 prize. And Alyssa didn’t mention it but she emceed today’s show.
